How to crochet a Blue whale key chain

The blue whale is one of the largest animals known to exist on the planet. People have discovered approximately 90 different species of whales. Today I’ll show you how to crochet a simple and cute blue whale that can be used like a key chain.

1. Materials

These are the materials that I used. You can replace them with other materials: Yarn (white, blue, pink), Crochet hook, Fiberfill, Plastic Eyes.

Note:

  1. Choose the right size of yarn and crochet hook. Here I used crochet hook No.1.
  2. Should use plastic eyes with latches. If you can, use different colored wool to embroider.

2. Abbreviations

R: Round

X : sc (single crochet)

Ch: chain

MR: Magic ring

V : increase (2 single crochets from 1 loop)

A : decrease (2 single crochets into 1 loop)

3. Doing

a. Head & body

Crochet with blue yarn

R1: MR: 6X=6

R2: 6V=12

R3: (X,V) x 6=18

R4: (2X,V) x 6=24

R5: (3X,V) x 6=30

R6: 30X=30

H7: (4X,V) x 6=36

H8-12: 36X = 36

Crochet with white yarn

Crocheting the upper part

H13: 36X = 36

H14: (7X,A) x 4=32

H15: (2X,A) x 8 = 24

H16: (X,A) x 8 = 16

H17: 8A = 8

Finish and cut the yarn.

Attach/embroider whale’s eyes at H10, the distance between eyes is 10 stitches. You can use pink yarn to make the whale’s cheeks look cuter.

b. The fins (2 pieces)

Crochet with blue yarn

MR: 1 single crochet, 3 double crochet, 1 single crochet. Pull out both ends, cut off the yarn.

c. The tail

Crochet with blue yarn

Rnd 1: 11 ch
Rnd 2: Starting in the 2nd chain from hook, single crochet, 2 double crochet, 1 single crochet, 2 slip stitches, 1 single crochet, 2 double crochet, 1 single crochet. Finish, cut off the yarn.

4. Assembly and decoration

After crocheting all parts, you sew together the head and tail, fins together. The distance between the left/right eye and the left/right fin is 2 rows (1st back). The distance between left/right eye and fishtail is 2 rows (13 sts back). So you have finished a very cute blue whale!

Congrats!
